The beginning idea of the plan of OMA for the Almere centre, 1994, was based on the superposition of uses, with an emphasis on pedestrians and the buildings. This block, which is home to the main commercial centre is paradigmatic regarding its variety of uses, from the car park and the underground infrastructures up to the inhabited green covering. Portzamparc's development of the Master Plan guidelines has a few changes and the deck is, after all, not a public space, but a bonus for the resi.

The 130 x 130 m block, one of the largest in the urban-plan, is divided into four sections by pedestrian roads. The commercial spaces in the plinth have zigzagging façades above which the housing block 'floats' independently. The circulation routes, that slice through the volume, prevent a massive, wall-like appearance. They widen at their intersection, forming a plaza that is marked by a small 10-floor tower on stilts.

The graphs shown here analyze the De Architekten cie project in Almere, the Netherlands. It is located in the urban plan of Almere Centrum, designed by OMA. The building contributes a high residential density to a much less dense plan. It proposes up to 20 types of housing unit and harmonises its urban profile. In this way, it is an exception to the recent Dutch tradition which was not one to promote height in urban plans built literally from scratch .

The young city of Almere keeps on growing. From the first buildings completed in 1976, the city has gone on to see population estimates of 350,000 inhabitants in 2030.
