Downtown Brussels has the outskirts on the inside. This is what it looks like if one observes this isolated dwelling set in an idyllic landscape as if it were on the edge of a large city despite its downtown location. It is easy to destroy all this in order to enlarge the floor area, which is the reason why the decision was taken to make the extension evident, making it disappear underneath the existing volume by building a plinth to conceal the new build.

Two level volumes have been inserted into an open 96 square-metre space with brick walls and concrete blocks, a raw concrete ceiling and HVAC ducts to structure the space.

The conversion of this three-storey building into a dwelling meeting contemporary functional requirements meant redistributing the open spaces of the original structure and dividing them into two areas: the living area and the service area, differentiated by their proximity to the exterior. The existence of one single facade where windows could be installed was the limiting factor for the rooms. Living, eating and sleeping, in a respective bottom-up order, are the functions stacked in each of the three storeys facing the exterior. The remaining activities and interior routes –respectively kitchen, toilet, storage, bathroom and stairs- are incorporated into the rear area built into a volume panelled with one single material: plywood boards. This way, the spaces have been differentiated by using different materials according to whether they have a primary or secondary function.

This project brings together two new uses: a dwelling and an office area in a former printer’s (Marthe Wéry’s old studio). The connection between the two spaces is a point of passage located at the centre of the floor plan. The workshop already had that look of an old container, of a stark structure and this has been preserved. The original beams, columns and concrete slab are exposed. The conversion stands out for its rigorous geometric intervention based on covering the v.

The progressive loss of industrial activities in the city centres of large American cities has resulted in a new concept in living: the loft. In this case in the courtyard of a downtown Brussels block, work was undertaken on a former workshop which has been cleared to explore the new codes of domestic life.

Here, inside, ornament is not an add-on to the shape but becomes part of the material itself. The new horizontal surfaces are plain while one can make out the rough patterns from t.

This building stands lined up with a large city block with row housing outside of Brussels. With the building, the main plaza of this former city, absorbed by Brussels, is provided with a large variety of overlapping uses.
