‘Europaallee’, the area around Zurich’s main railway station, is a key development site owing to its central position and excellent accessibility. In the masterplan by the architects KCAP, the morphology and block structure of the surrounding city is elaborated in order to insert the new development into its surroundings in a natural way. Construction envelopes have been established for the new blocks, with basic rules for maximum dimensions, penetration of daylight and sightlines. This establishes a sustainable structure that can be filled in gradually, responding to current programmatic demands, architectural tastes and market developments.

A comfortable room temperature for most humans is between 22º and 26º Centigrade. The project, 2226, is named after these figures and it was built by the architects Baumschlager Eberle as their own head office based on the principle of creating climate comfort through the regulation of natural air flow. Due to the between-slab height and the 76 cm thickness of the brick walls, the heat gain obtained through solar radiation is transferred to the centre of the building. Heat sensors have been fitted to automatically open and close the windows.

The programme is for an office building for leasing to one or more tenants so great spatial flexibility was a requirement on all floors. Three circulation cores allow for segmentation and provide independent access from the ground floor.

The form defers to the decision to fracture the block and to curve t.

The Barcode urban plan, designed by the architecture practice MVRDV for the new Bjorvika district, proposes a proximity between volumes which requires the buildings to be sculpted to let in daylight. In the case of the DNB bank office building project, the strategy involves pixelating the total solid of the spacious 3D form and removing the excess modules. This enables the permitted built volume to be obtained and also provides favourable orientations and views. On the other hand, by extrac.
