What was formerly two apartments, a ground floor studio flat and a garage area, has been converted to a single-family house with a work area. The need to increase the floor area per resident is one of the realities of contemporary housing due to the increasingly common fact of two uses –working and living– being inserted under one roof. From outside, the facade has been stripped back to essentials and the only new feature is the bright red front door.

There are some characteristics of density not measurable in terms of figures and ratios, which have the same importance. These are the performances that define the Qualities of Density. We  can classify them into two categories: hard and soft.

These categories are explained in the chapter Performances. The way the buildings act, included in the book Why Density?

"What is density? This is a very simple question at first sight that makes us wonder about it for years.

Before trying to answer this question, let’s see what density is not. Very often, when you hear about density and city you associate with images from Hong Kong or Benidorm, the hyperdense city, –with skyscrapers put together and small apartments inside.

It reminds us of the story of the cubic watermelon. Around the 80s, a farmer, on the island of Shikoku, south.

Incorporating the architects’ own office into this 14th Century building was part of an integrated refurbishment plan for the whole complex, a former convent which had lain derelict for over 20 years. Work undertaken on the building over the years had included adding a 19th Century staircase and servant bedrooms. In order to return the building to the perception of the original space, the architects removed the partition walls and the false ceilings, leaving the timber frame exposed, an.

Montse and Joan had a house requiring repair which they also wanted to extend. The project had intended for the garden to come inside the house which was impossible with the existing facade and the small windows. So the living space was extended outside by projecting spaces towards the courtyard. Low-cost materials and solutions were used: galvanized metal frames, corrugated polycarbonate roof panels and plexiglass for the sliding doors. An intermediate space functioning as a temperature regu.

The aim of this intervention is to uncover the construction features of the building, a 19th Century tannery, in order to give some historical character to the interior of the coworking centre. New compartmentalization elements and furniture are added to the original timber structures, the brick walls and the metal columns which, unlike other projects by the same studio, are rather restrained in their layout. The space of the round section, for breakout and events, and the untreated wooden la.

Bram and Isabel purchased an old farm which came with a barn. Instead of refurbishing the whole volume, they opted only to convert the half adjoining the annex, which had a closer relationship with the building. This decision was to bring significant cost-savings by only initially renovating the area which the owners required. The interior partitions between the kitchen and the non-refurbished part of the barn, as well as for the exterior glazed volume protruding from the facade, have been pu.

The intervention is based on using pieces of furniture purpose-designed by the architects for coworking spaces. By using very simple craft-based technology and low-cost materials, they propose solutions according to the activity and the continuity.
