The Baas intervention on the former building by Fargas & Tous was to update the architects’ original idea: to build a large void for public use surrounded by work spaces rather than adding another office building to the city.

The four small apartments contained in the floor plan of this 12-storey tower block, designed in the 1960s by architect Hans Isler, have been converted to two larger dwellings. The north face has also been enlarged with studio flats and maisonettes, based on the Le Corbusier section in the Unité d’Habitation as part of this renovation process.

Limited resources created an opportunity to set up a temporary office space in a former newspaper office. The architects bought second-hand furniture on eBay and sprayed this, as well as decorative elements and part of the surfaces of the premises, with environmentally-friendly polyurea spray creating a sort of staged spaces for the different work areas.

This former window and door frame workshop has been converted to a dwelling with a series of extras which are not normally found in a standard apartment. A small guest-house, for a Bed & Breakfast business, has been built into the existing unit made from two stacked metal sea containers.

The decision to create a printed paper collage runs the risk of concealing, by a purely decorative action, a clearly architectural strategy as that of altering the perception of a long narrow space. The mural design, using strips of paper and incorporating boxes which break up the linearity, marks out the central circulation space and creates different areas of use.
