SOM’s website states that the John Hancock Center is the “world’s first mixed-use (hybrid) high-rise”. We do not know if this assertion is in fact accurate, but we do not really mind. There are some other facts we find more relevant: this 433 metres, 100-storey tower contains offices, retail, housing, parking, a TV and radio broadcast facility and a public observatory with the best views of Chicago (we include some of them in the post).

Eden Bio is a construction comprised of 100 social apartments and ateliers for artists inside a city block in the East of Paris. Buildings aren’t almost visible from the street, and discovering the intervention requires a walk along two narrow alleys flanked by gardens that cross the site.

We include in our book HoCo this apartment building for students inserted in the motley fabric of the 20th district. Its façade over Ménilmontant Street is divided into three volumes as response to the different scales of the adjacent buildings. Its aluminium louvers, stainless shutters and the fuchsia coated entry hall cheer up the stroll up the popular street.

Millenium Park is a space for art, music and architecture, opened in 2004, that resulted from blending the city of Chicago with a group of well-known architects and artists. The total area of 9,9 hectares along North Michigan Avenue host works such as the Jay Pritzker Pavilion, by Frank Gehry, The Crown Fountain, by Jaume Plensa, the Lurie Garden, by  Gustavson Guthrie Nichol Ltd, Piet Oudolf and Robert Israel, or the popular Cloud Gate, by Anish Kapoor. More recently, the Burnham Pavili.

Last August, the Portuguese Architecture blog A Barriga de um Arquitecto published a review of a+t’s latest release: HoCo, Density Housing Construction and Costs.

A Barriga de um Arquitecto was born with the purpose of creating a space focused in contemporary architecture and urban design, featuring the recent work of Portuguese architects as well as international projects of especial relevance.

The first phase of High Line (the transformation of a former southwest Manhattan freight train line into a public space) was opened to the public in the spring of 2009 and runs between Gasenvoort and 20th streets. This passage, which goes under the Standard Hotel, is located in this first stretch, towards the start of the promenade, the view.
